Double Falls Payson Canyon Utah

Payson Canyon is home to many outdoor activities, including hiking, fishing, camping, and the famous Nebo Loop Scenic Byway. With all the information online about this canyon, I was very surprised when I found little information about this beautiful double waterfall, known as Double Falls.

The trailhead to Double Falls is located approximately 9.8 miles from the mouth of Payson Canyon. The parking area is located on the south side of the canyon road. There is a wood sign in the parking lot marked Jones Ranch with a forest service map.

The actual trail to Double Falls is not marked, and the only way I located the trail was using google maps. From the parking lot you will see a road heading east/northeast. This road ends at a large primitive camping area. On the east/northeast side of this primitive camping area, you will see a trail heading into the aspens.

Double Falls Hiking Trail:

The trail to Double Falls starts out with a few small stream crossings and meanders its way through groves of aspens. The trail is flat to start, until it descends slightly to the creek. At this point, you will be standing on top of the first waterfall. If you wish to get to the bottom of the falls, you will see a fork in the trail just before you reach the creek. Take this fork until you reach a rope tied to a tree. This rope was put in place to assist you in getting down the steep slope to the base of the falls. Thank you to the person who kindly left the rope to assist future hikers.

Best Time to Hike to Double Falls:

As with most waterfall hikes, late spring, early summer seems to be the best time to do these hikes. The runoff from snow melt ensures water is flowing in most creeks, providing spectacular views of water cascading down the falls. I would suspect the creek feeding Double Falls will be running low by the end of summer.

The hike to Double Falls is an easy hike and can be enjoyed by all ages. The hike is approximately one-mile round trip.
