There's a lot to see and do in Tooele County, Utah. You could spend the entirety of your trip exploring the mountain trails and soaking in the dramatic landscapes. If you need a change of pace from the wilderness, it's well worth taking some time to head back to civilization and explore the Benson Grist Mill, one of Utah's historical locations.

The mill serves as a social and community hub throughout the year, with events like farmers' markets and festivals marking every season. If you time your trip right, you'll have a chance to learn about the history and culture of Tooele County, have fun with the locals, and pick up some cool souvenirs, too.

A Historic Mill and Thriving Community Hub

Construction of the millsite began in 1850, when L.D.S. Church Apostle Ezra Taft Benson received authorization to begin the works from then-President Brigham Young. At the time, the area was called Twin Springs Creek. By 1851, a functional sawmill stood on the site, and work began on the construction of what would eventually become the E.T. Benson Flour Mill.

A community quickly grew around the millsite, and it served as the county seat of the area until Tooele City's formation in 1961. The flour mill remained in operation for 78 years before briefly switching to processing animal feed and eventually sitting unused for almost 40 years.

In 1983, the owners at Terracor Corp. donated the mill back to Tooele County, and the county formed a volunteer committee to restore the site to its former glory. Today, the millsite is open for both tourists and members of the community to enjoy.

A Virtual Village With a Rich History

The volunteer committee has opened up the mill for field trips, weddings, other social parties, and day trippers. The site has been faithfully restored with a replica miller's house, wagons, barn, granary, and historic cabins. It's an ideal stop-off on any road trip, with covered picnic tables and a park for visitors looking to relax and enjoy the atmosphere.

Visit during the summer months, and you may find a farmers' market or even a Ren Faire in full swing. This year, on July 24th, there's a Pioneer Fun Day taking place at the mill. This day is sure to be fun for the whole family, with plenty of arts and crafts, educational games, and entertainment for children and adults alike.

Visit later in the year to enjoy a Fall Festival, or the Christmas lighting and nativity scenes that take place at the end of November each year. The Benson Grist Mill is the perfect setting to capture the magic of the holiday season, and the light shows are truly breathtaking.
