Morrison Knudson MK Tunnel Site San Rafael Swell
One of the unique sites to see while traveling along the Buckhorn Wash (Draw) Road is the MK Tunnels site. The history states in late 1947 military personnel suddenly appeared in the Buckhorn Flat Area. Rumors and speculation of this military buildup were widespread throughout the local communities.

In 1948 with a sizable crew the Morrison Knudson company began tunneling deep underground. It was said that high explosives were to be detonated underground to test the rock structure in the area. The tunneling in the area was completed after several years, and some 320,000 pounds of explosives were detonated throughout the project's history. Although the ultimate purposes of the grand project were never revealed, the locals believe the purpose of the tunneling was to build a complex like Cheyenne Mountain, but the sandstone failed to pass the test.

Unlike most of the unique sites located throughout the San Rafael Swell the MK Tunnel Site is not well marked. As you travel along the Buckhorn Wash (Draw) Road, you will see an informational sign located in a small turnout. From the turnout, a small trail leads through a wash and up a hill to one of the many tunnels in the area. I marked the location on Google Maps and these are the GPS coordinates 39°09'55.4"N 110°44'07.9"W.
Even though most of the tunnels in the area have been sealed, or gated off, it is still fun to explore and learn more about this unique location.
Directions:
The MK Tunnel and many other sites can be reached by traveling from Cleveland, Huntington, or Castle Dale on the Buckhorn Wash (Draw) Road, or from Interstate 70 via the Cottonwood Wash Road.
Visiting tips:
The San Rafael Swell is an isolated desert environment so come prepared. Spring and fall are a great time to visit this area and enjoy the many scenic sites. Summer temperatures can be hot and uncomfortable, and winter nights can be very cold. Most of the roads to the main attractions within the swell are well graded dirt roads that can be traveled on by most vehicles in dry conditions. Be sure before you begin your venture you have a full tank of gas, spare tire, tools, and plenty of provisions and water for you and your family.
