The Wedge Overlook "Little Grand Canyon San Rafael Swell Utah

by Troy Webb

The Wedge Overlook is one of the most scenic vistas in the state. It overlooks the San Rafael river as it flows through the “Little Grand Canyon”. The San Rafael River, which flows into the Colorado River, is made up of Ferron Creek, Cottonwood Creek, and Huntington Creek.

The wedge is a massive geological dome of which the top layers have eroded away. Further erosion caused by the San Rafael River has created the spectacular views that are now available. The Wedge Overlook provides restrooms, handicap access, camping (limited to designated sites) hiking and mountain biking.

Directions:

There are several ways to reach the Wedge Overlook “Little Grand Canyon”. You can drive through Castle Dale, Cleveland, or take an access point off of Highway 6 near Green River, Utah. Because we were traveling from Salt Lake City, we decided to enter the San Rafael Swell through Cleveland Utah.

From Salt Lake, take Interstate 15 to the Price/Manti exit (Highway 6). Travel through the Spanish Fork Canyon to Price, Utah.

Once in Price, take UT-10 to UT-155 for approximately 18.3 miles. Once you enter the town of Cleveland, you will see the KFJ C Store on your right. This is a great place to pick up those last-minute snacks and drinks you will need while exploring the Swell.

From the KFJ C Store, travel South and follow the signs to the Wedge Overlook.

Visiting tips:

The San Rafael Swell is an isolated desert environment so come prepared. Spring and fall are a great time to visit this area and enjoy the many scenic sites. Summer temperatures can be hot and uncomfortable, and winter nights can be very cold. Most of the roads to the main attractions within the swell are well graded dirt roads that can be traveled on by most vehicles in dry conditions. Be sure before you begin your venture you have a full tank of gas, spare tire, tools, and plenty of provisions and water for you and your family.
